John Cena is a brand in himself today, and WWE is well aware of this fact. That is why the company is reportedly planning for the 16-time world champion to participate in a big-money bout at April’s WrestleMania 39.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), the organization’s main plan for the legendary superstar at Mania is for him to face Austin Theory.
The United States champion has often been compared to Cena due to the similarities he shares with the latter during his younger days. It has also been reported that WWE is high on Theory and has big plans for someone they see as a future star.

Interestingly, Fightful Select (h/t Sunil Joseph of Ringside News) had reported recently that when Cena appeared on the final SmackDown of 2022, WWE filmed something involving him and Theory for future use. This news has not been confirmed, but if it did happen, it could point to a Cena vs. Theory match on the horizon.
Another name that has been doing the rounds as Cena’s possible WrestleMania 39 opponent is Logan Paul. The social media shocked everyone with his in-ring work against Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel in November, and although he is out with an injury, his star power, combined with that of Cena’s, makes a match between the two incredibly appealing.
It was recently revealed by Meltzer (h/t Mukherjee) that a match between John Cena and Paul was rejected by WWE, despite the latter asking face the franchise player at the Granddaddy of the All, but things could change in the next two months, so keep a look out for for this space for more updates.
