For the forthcoming WrestleMania 39 premium live event, WWF Legend Stone Cold Steve Austin was given two marquee matches, one against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title and one against ‘The Beast’ Brock Lesnar, but ultimately declined both.
A Lesnar-Austin fight was first slated for a RAW programme in 2002, but Austin left the WWE that night, according to The Wrestling Observer, so the Lesnar match was actually the way more serious offer. This makes sense given that Roman would automatically face the Royal Rumble winner:
“As noted, there was an attempt for a Lesnar vs. Steve Austin match, as the two have never faced off.
While there may have been mentions of Austin with Roman Reigns at one point, it was never anywhere near serious. Those close to Austin said it was Lesnar who he was approached about. Austin turned that down.”
During WrestleMania 38, Stone Cold made a triumphant comeback and even competed in an impromptu wrestling bout against Kevin Owens.
