Since being written off TV at this week’s AEW Dynamite via a vicious attack by new AEW World Champion MJF, the future of William Regal in the company and his supposed move to WWE have been speculated a lot.
However, plans for the Brit, if he were to stay back in the company, have now come to light.
Dave Meltzer, in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, disclosed what was in store for Regal if he remained with AEW.
“There were different ideas debated including one favored by a number of key people, although all ideas were that MJF would end up as champion. Others were also for Regal to turn with him on Moxley and then be turned back to set up MJF vs. Danielson, to set up his leaving.”
The veteran pro wrestling journalist added that Regal certainly needed to be written off of TV, as some plans didn’t involve him much. However, eventually, the idea was to do MJF versus Bryan Danielson down the line.
“Others were not so heavily involving Regal although they still felt they needed to write him out. There were just different explanations of how to end up in basically the same direction, with MJF as champion, Danielson as the next major contender, and Regal out of the picture (H/T WrestleTalk).”
The Gentleman Villain’s future in the business has become quite a compelling story, and it will be interesting to see how it develops.
