Saraya made her long-awaited and highly anticipated move in the wrestling world last night trending worldwide on all social media platforms. WWE fans have known for the last decade or so as Paige but as of last night on AEW (Sept. 21) at Dynamite Grand Slam we learned of the transformation using her own name and debuting as Saraya.
But the scene in New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium certainly seemed like the rollout of a wrestler, not a manager. Saraya told the heels she chased from the ring that this was her house as she gestured to the ring. Announcers Taz, Tony Schiavone & Excalibur talked about how the landscape of the AEW women’s division had changed, and how the second generation performer could “flat out go.”
Saraya hasn’t wrestled since the horror injury all those years ago although she has started taking some indie bookings lately in the UK.
She has stated that she’s not opposed to wrestling, but it has to be the right situation, after a neck injury forced her to retire in December 2017.
Fightful Select learned this week via AEW sources that there had at least been conversations with Saraya this summer. They weren’t given the additional context of that, beyond one person stating there stating that they believe WWE would also be interested in bringing her back considering the new regime.
